1948 - The first tape recorder was sold
1956 - Productions by George Martin dominated the top 3 positions on the UK Top 20 singles charts. Eve Boswell’s Pickin’ a Chicken was followed by a monologue by Irish sports commentator Eamonn Andrews’s The Shifting Whispering Sands, and dance band vocalist Dick James followed with his theme to a popular TV series, Robin Hood. Also, Elvis Presley released Heartbreak Hotel
1958 - Little Richard entered the Oakland Seventh Day Adventist Theological College in Huntsville. He explained that, while flying over the Phillipines on tour, the wing on his plane caught fire, and his prayers that the flames go out were answered. As a result, he said he’d give up rock & roll so he could serve God.
1960 - Legendary British record producer Joe Meek launched his own label, Triumph Records. Gary Glitter, under the name of Paul Raven, released his first single Alone in the Night / Too Proud
1962Joey & The Starlighters had no 1 on the US singles charts with Peppermint Twist part 1, while Chubby Checker had 4 albums on the US Top 10 - For Twisters Only, Your Twist Party, Bobby Rydell/Chubby Checker and Let’s Twist Again. Elvis Presley received his 29th gold for Can’t Help Falling In Love
1964 - The Rolling Stones appear as judges on TV’s Juke Box Jury. Their somewhat impolite behaviour on set causes furore amongst British press. The Beatles release their Introducing the Beatles LP in US
1966 - The Overlanders were no. 1 in the UK with their cover of The Beatles’s Michelle
1968 - The Bee Gees made their live debut in the US when they played the Anaheim Centre, California. They pocketed $50,000 and returned to England without any more appearances in the US.Otis Redding’s Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay was released 6 weeks after the plane crash that killed him
1969 - Peter, Paul & Mary were awarded gold for Album 1700
1971 - David Bowie arrived in the US for the first time, but could not perform due to work permit restrictions. He did, however, attract publicity by wearing a dress to a promotion event
1972 - The New Seekers receive gold for I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing. It’s mainly remembered as a Coca Cola jingle
1973Roxy Music won “most promising new name in the NME readers’ poll. Also, Stevie Wonder’s Superstition was his 2nd no. 1 in US, 10 years after his first no. 1
1976 - David Bowie brought a $2 million law-suit against attorney Micahel Lippan. Bowie charged that Lippan took a 15% agent’s fee instead of the usual 10%, and that he withheld $475,000 after being dismissed by Bowie
1977 - The Clash signed to CBS Records in the UK
1979 - Ian Dury & The Blockheads hit no. 1 in the UK with Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick
1980 - Def Leppard played the first of 2 nights at The Marquee, London, while Dexy’s Midnight Runners kicked off a 26-date UK tour at London’s Music machine
1981 - Georgia-based Capricorn Records filed for bankruptcy
1984 - Madonna made her first appearance in the UK on TV programme The Tube, performing Holiday. It was broadcast live from the Hacienda Club in Manchester. Also, Michael Jackson’s hair caught fire while filming a Pepsi Cola commercial. John & Yoko Lennon release Milk & Honey
1986 - Bruce Springsteen, Tina Turner, Huey Lewis & The News, Pat Benatar, Wham! and Chicago were award winners at the Grammys
1990 - Kylie Minogue) had her 3rd UK no. 1 with Tears On My Pillow, originally recorded by Little Anthony & The Imperials) in 1958. Also, Billy Idol won a libel action against British newspaper News of the World. Today is declared Tom Petty Day in Gainsville, Florida
1992 - Michael Bolton won the 19th American Music Awards
1993 - Warner Bothers announced they were releasing Ice-T from his contract due to “creative differences”. The previous summer, the company found themselves in the middle of controversy over Ice-T’s song Cop Killer
1996 - Babylon Zoo started 5 weeks at no. 1 on the UK charts with Spaceman, the fastest selling non-charity single ever (it sold 420,000 copies in 6 days)
1998 - James Brown was charged with possession of marijuana & unlawful use of a firearm, when police were called to his South Carolina home
2004 - R&B singer Faith Evans and her husband were charged with possession of cocaine and marijuana in Atlanta, Georgia
