1956 - Buddy Holly recorded Blue Days Black Nights in Nashville
1958The Silhouettes released Get A Job. Also, a St Louis radio station KWK finished its “Record Breaking Week”. Management had all rock & roll music banned from the airwaves, so the disc jockeys gave each record from the library a “farewell spin” before it was smashed to pieces. The station manager called the action “a simple weeding out of undesirable music
1964 - The Beatles released Meet The Beatles, their debut album for the US market
1965 - The Rolling Stones and The Kinks made their first appearance on TV’s Shindig, along with The Dave Clark Five, Petula Clark, Bobby Vee, Bobby Sherman and Gerry & The Pacemakers. Also, The Byrds recorded Mr. Tambourine Man
1966 - Spencer Davis Group’s Keep On Runnin’ went to no.1. Also, Bill Graham, concert promoter, put on his 3-day Trips Festival at Longshoremen’s Hall in San Francisco. Large quantities of LSD were ingested
1967The Monkees TV show went to air in the UK
1968 - John Fred & The Playboy Band’s Judy In Disguise (With Glasses) started 2 weeks at no. 1 in the US. The Bee Gees released Words. Also, Bob Dylan, The Band, Joan Baez, Odetta, Arlo Guthrie, Judy Collins, Richie Havens, Pete Seeger, Ramblin’ Jack Elliot and Peter, Paul & Mary were amongst friends performing for the Tribute to Woody Guthrie Concert. It was Dylan’s first performance since his motorcycle accident 2 years earlier
1971 - Yoko Ono introduced John Lennon to her parents in Japan
1972 - The Rolling Stones were awarded gold for their greatest hits LP Hot Rocks
1973 - Jerry Lee Lewis was warned before his debut at the legendary Grand Ol’ Opry that there be “no rock & roll & no cussin’”. By the end of his set he had played Great Balls of Fire, Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On and Good Golly Miss Molly. Jerry announced to the audience, “I’m a rock ‘n’ rollin’, country & western, rhythm & blues singin’ mother ****er!”. No one disagreed
1974 - Stevie Wonder made a successful comeback at the Rainbow Theatre in London, 5 months after a near-fatal car accident
1975 - The US Top 5 singles were 5: Boogie On, Reggae Woman (Stevie Wonder), 4: Fire (Ohio Players), 3: Mandy (Barry Manilow), 2: Laughter In The Rain (Neil Sedaka) and at 1: Please Mr. Postman (The Carpenters)
1979 - Chic performed at London’s Hammersmith Odeon. The Doobie Brothers released What a Fool Believes
1982 - Thinking it was a rubber prop, Ozzy Osbourne bit off the head of an unconscious bat after fans had thrown it on stage. He was taken to hospital for a rabies injection. Meanwhile, headlining a UNICEF benefit concert at The Savoy in New York were Charlie Daniels, Rick Derringer, Phil Lynott and Carmine Appice

advocating fans stealing copies of their album. Virgin Megastore responded by pulling their album off the shelves. Meanwhile, The Mamas & Papas and The Eagles were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame
2002 - George Harrison had a posthumous no. 1 hit with the re-release of My Sweet Lord, replacingAllayah’s More Than A Woman at the top spot. It was the first time in chart history that a deceased artist had taken over from another at no. 1
