1962 - Chubby Checker’s The Twist went to no. 1 on the US charts for the 2nd time, the previous time being September 1960. Meanwhile, The Beach BoysSurfin’ entered the Billboard charts at 118
1964 - The Beatles released I Wanna Hold Your Hand and Bob Dylan released The Times, They are a’Changin’
1967 - The Rolling Stones perform on The Ed Sullivan Show
1968 - Cream releasedSunshine of your Love. Elsewhere, Dr. H.C. Pollack of the University of Florida reported that ”test have found that the noise generated from rock & roll concerts is harmful to the ears of teenagers”
1969 - Elvis Presley returned to a recording studio in Memphis for the first time since he signed to RCA Records from Sun in 1955. Also, The Beatles released their Yellow Subnarine album
1973Eric Clapton - The made his stage comeback at the Rainbow Theatre with Pete Townshend, Rick Grech, Steve Winwood, Jim Capaldi, Jimmy Karstein and ’Rebop’ Kwaku Baah. The set opened and closed with Layla. Afterwards, Clapton told a reporter, ”I was very nervous, I felt sick, the whole bit.” Referring to the audience he added ”They don’t know how much it helped me.” Meanwhile, Slade’s LP, Slayed went to no. 1 on the UK charts
1974 - A small riot by fans broke out when Steve Miller was inadvertently not invited to his own ‘after-concert’ party at Tower Records in Los Angeles. Police closed down the store – there were 37 injuries including 17 police and 8 arrests
1976Greg Allmans was subpoena’d by a grand jury investigating a drug ring. Also, the trial of 7 Brunswick Records and Dukar Records employees, got underway. They were charged with bilking artists out of $184,000 in royalties. Charges had been brought during a federal investigation for possible instances of payola
1978 - The Police started recording their first album. Also, Elvis Presley’s cover of Paul Anka’s My Way went gold
1979 - The Young Mens’ Christian Association filed a libel suit against The Village People over their song Y.M.C.A.. The suit was later dropped
1980 - Grateful Dead, Starship and The Beach Boysheadlined a benefit gig in Los Angeles for victims of the Khmer Rouge in Kampuchea
1981 - Bow Wow Wow performed at The Venue in London
1984 - BBC Radio 1 announced a ban on Frankie Goes To Hollywood’s Relax, calling “obscene”. BBC TV followed suit, but it still went on to be a UK no 1.
1986 - Sex Pistols members John Lydon, Steve Jones and Paul Cook, as well as Sid Vicious’s mum sued former manager Malcolm McClaren for £1 million in unpaid royalties. They settled out of court
1990 - New Kids On The Block’s single Hangin’ Tough went to no. 1 on the UK charts
1993 - Bobby Brown was arrested for simulating sex acts on stage. This was the 2nd time Augusta Police had him for the same offense.
1999 - Steps’ single, Heartbreak / Tragedy went to no. 1 on the UK charts
2003 - Diana Ross appeared in a US court charged with driving while twice over the drink driving alcohol limit. Peter Townshend was arrested on suspicion of child porn offences. Police impounded 7 computers from his home in Surrey

  1. It might be good to also post "the rest of the story", re Pete Townshend.

    "After four months of investigation by officers from Scotland Yard's child protection group, it was established that Mr Townshend was not in possession of any downloaded child abuse images. He has fully co-operated with the investigation."
