· Frankie Laine (Frank LoVecchio) and his partner Ruth Smith set the all-time marathon dance record lasting 3,501 hours (145 consecutive days). They made $500 each, but Frankie went on to make 13 million-selling records
1958
· Elvis Presley was placed 2nd in a talent contest at a Jimmie Rodgers Memorial Show
· Jerry Lee Lewis played the 3rd and last of what should have been a 37-date tour of Britain. The London Morning Star ran an editorial calling Lewis “an undesirable alien” and called for his deportation. Lewis was booed from the stage and the next day went back to US

· Over 1000 fans had to be treated at a David Cassidy concert due to the frenzied excitement. One fan, Bernadette Whelan died from heart failure 4 days later. The head of the British Safety Council called it a “suicide concert” and Cassidy said “I do feel responsible”

· A drunken Jimmy Page and Robert Plant verbally assaulted 1st-class passengers on a transatlantic British Airways flight. Amongst the abused were actors Telly Savalas and Dudley Moore

· An Irish TV programme, Youngline, a series which regularly highlighted young people’s interests, featured a new Irish band called U2, alias Hype
