1943 - Lysergic acid diethylamide was first synthesized by Albert Hoffman in a lab in Switzerland. LSD played its part in the evolution of music & its culture in the 1960s
1956 - Little Richard released Long Tall Sally
1958 - CBS Radio Network premiered the first regularly scheduled nationally broadcast rock & roll show Allan Freed’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Dance Party. The Platters released Twilight Time
1962 - While at Alexis Korner’s Ealing Jazz Club, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards met Brian Jones for the first time. Brian was calling himself Elmo Lewis and was playing guitar that night for Ian Stewart, Geoff Bradford and Paul Jones. Ian went on to be tour manager for The Rolling Stones while Paul ended up fronting Manfred Mann. Shelley Fabares had a hit with Johnny Angel
1973 - Diana Ross started a 2-week run at no. 1 on the US album charts with Lady Sings The Blues. Elton John released Daniel. Vicki Lawrence had a hit with The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia
1975 - Ritchie Blackmore quit Deep Purple to form his own band, Rainbow. Tommy Bolin replaced him in Deep Purple
1977 - The Clash released their debut album
1979 - Siouxsie & The Banshees played a charity gig for MENCAP but after crowd trouble, were hit with a £2000 bill for damage to seats. A 2-day California Music Festival opened at the L.A. Memorial Coliseum with 110,000 attending the event. Artist performing included Aerosmith, The Boomtown Rats, Cheap Trick, Ted Nugent and Van Halen
1979 - The Doobie Brothers went to no. 1 with their only US chart topper, Minute By Minute
1981 - Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band started their first world tour in Hamburg. It was Bruce’s first tour outside the US and took in 10 countries. Steve Marriott, guitarist for Humble Pie, crushed his hand in a closing door. Rumours that he would never play again were unfounded.
1984 - A record 40 UK acts appeared on the US singles charts
1985 - Wham! became the first western pop group to perform in China 1988 - Alice Cooper almost hanged himself onstage when a safety rope snapped & left him dangling. A roadie came to his aid after a few seconds
1990 - Taylor Dane had a hit with Love Will Lead You Back. Farm Aid IV was held at the Indiana Hoosierdome. Artists included Neil Young, Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp, Guns ‘n’ Roses and Jackson Browne. Elton John dedicated Candle in the Wind to AIDS patient Ryan White who died later in the night
1997 - Liam Gallagher married Patsy Kensit
1998 - George Michael was arrested in a public toilet in Beverly Hills for lewd conduct
2000 - A tribute to Joni Mitchell was held in New York, and featured Elton John, Bryan Adams, Shawn Colvin, James Taylor, Cyndi Lauper, Richard Thompson, k d lang and Mary Chapin Carpenter.
2002 - UK Pop Idol runner up, Gareth Jones was at no. 1 for his version of Unchained Melody
2003 - Avril Lavigne won four prizes, including Best Single & Best New Artist at Canada’s Juno Awards
