1967 - Soft Machine released Love Makes Sweet Music. Jerry Lee Lewis appeared at Steve Paul’s Scene in New York.
1968 - Diana Ross & The SupremesGreatest Hits hit no. 1 in the UK. The Beatles released Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields
1969 - Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash recorded Girl From The North Country. It appeared on Bob’s Nashville Skyline album
1970 - Joni Mitchell announced onstage at London’s Royal Albert Hall that she would be retiring from live performances (she was back onstage by the end of the year)
1971 - James Taylor made his TV debut on The Johnny Cash Show. Other guests included Neil Young, Linda Ronstadt and Tony Joe White. Elton John’s self-titled US debut went gold.
1972 - Pink Floyd started a 3-night gig at London’s Rainbow Theatre playing tracks from Dark Side of The Moon a full year before its album release. Tickets cost £1. Jonathan Edwards was awarded gold for Sunshine and instead of buying a fancy Porsche, he bought a fancy truck
1973 - Dueling Banjos went to no. 1 in the US
1975 - John Lennon released his Rock ‘n’ Roll album
1976 - An attempt to fuse Shakespeare with rock music, Rockabye Hamlet opened on Broadway, but failed days later. The Eagles released their Greatest Hits album. Harvard University’s Hasty Pudding Theatrical Society gave its annual “Woman of the Year” award to Bette Midler who responded with ”this award characterises what the American male wants in a woman – brains, talent and gorgeous tits”
1979 - Blondie scored their first UK no. 1 with Parallel Lines. It stayed on top for 4 weeks. Also, they released their single Heart of Glass. The Clash opened the US leg of their Pearl Harbour ‘79 tour at New York’s Palladium
1980 - Kenny Rogers was no. 1 on the UK singles charts with Coward of the County
1982 - J Geils Band perform on The Joe Franklin Show in New York City
1988 - A 12-year-old fan of Motley Crue in Hollywood, Florida, set his legs on fire trying to imitate a stunt from Live Wire. The band issued a statement saying that the their stunts should not be tried at home
1989 - R.E.M., Hoodoo Gurus and The Go-Betweens performed at Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion. Whitesnake’s David Coverdale married Tawny Kitaen
1990 - Aerosmith appeared on Saturday Night Live performing their version of the Wayne’s World theme in a skit where they appeared as themselves
1996 - Bruce Springsteen’s expired Platinum Express Card was sold for $4,500 at a New York memorabilia sale
2000 - John Lennon’s Steinway piano, on which he composed Imagine, went on display at the Beatles Story Museum in Liverpool
