1963 - The Beatles took control of their own business affairs following the death of their manager Brian Epstein. They announced the closure of Beatles USA their fan club and business office, and fired their press agents in USA. They severed ties with NEMS, the management company previously headed by Epstein that had recently been joined by Bee Gees manager Robert Stigwood. Instead, they announced the formation of Apple Corps, a company that would incorporate a record label, management and patronage of young artists whose ideas needed initial investment, as well as the needs of The Beatles themselves

1988 - A British High Court judge ruled that the recording contract that tied Holly Johnson (lead vocalist for Frankie Goes To Hollywood) to the record label ZTT was ‘nonsensical’ and ‘an unreasonable restraint’ on the singer. The judgement allowed Johnson to accept a new contract as a solo artist with MCA Records and required ZTT to pay $500,000 court costs
1990 - Paula Abdul’s Opposites Attract hit no. 1 for 3 weeks on the US charts. Eric Clapton played the last of an 18-night gig at London’s Royal Albert Hall
1993 - Michael Jackson granted his first interview in 15 years to Oprah Winfrey. In the interview he claimed he had a disorder that destroys skin pigmentation, and claimed he’d had very little plastic surgery

1998 - Axl Rose was charged with disorderly conduct following a row with a baggage handler at Arizona Airport. He was released on bail
2004 - Diana Ross was sentenced to 2 days in gaol after pleading “no contest” to a 2002 drink driving charge. She was allowed to enter her plea over the telephone, and was able to serve the sentence at a prison near her home
