The Rolling Stones' frontman hand-picks a selection of artists and music that influenced the band's ground-breaking sound, in particular their classic album Exile On Main St. In conversation with Paul Sexton, Mick talks through a wide-ranging playlist that reflects his own, and the band's, love of classic R&B, gospel, country and reggae.

The fascinating mix of material conjures up the musical environment of the late 60s and turn of the 70s, in which the Stones, and so many of their peers, were scaling new and ever more eclectic creative heights. · A female Monkees fan stowed away on the band’s plane between shows in Minneapolis & St Louis. The girl’s father threatened to bring charges against the band for transporting a minor across state lines
· British pirate radio station Radio 355 went off the air

· The 2-day Newport Pop Festival began in Costa Mesa, California, featuring Canned Heat, Sonny & Cher, Steppenwolf, The Byrds, Grateful Dead, Tiny Tim, Iron Butterfly, Eric Burdon & The Animals and Jefferson Airplane. Over 100,000 fans attended

· Concert promoter Bill Graham announced that he was ”finished with San Fransisco” effective December 31, when new owners took over the old Fillmore Auditorium

· A benefit concert was held to raise money for the widow of Little Feat’s Lowell George who died from a heart attack linked to a drug overdose a few weeks earlier. Members of his band, Payne, Barrere, Kenny Gradney, Sam Clayton and Richie Hayward, as well as Jackson Browne, Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, Michael McDonald, Nicolette Larson and Bonnie Raitt helped to raise over $230,000
· Electric Light Orchestra released Don’t Bring Me Down
· Led Zeppelin played their 1st UK concert in 4 years at Knebworth in Hertfordshire, England

· John Lennon started recording what would be his last album, Double Fantasy at the Hit Factory, New York
· Pink Floyd began a 5-night season at London’s Earls Court Arena. The concerts were unique in that during the 1st half of each show, a wall was built across the stage to represent the separation of the group from its audience. During the 2nd half of each show, the wall was demolished

· Organisers called it the biggest rock audience ever – 600,000 people turned up to an open-air show at Watkins Glen racetrack in New York for Summer Jam featuring The Allman Brothers Band, The Band and Grateful Dead. Presumably, the crowd was there for the atmosphere as it was doubtful anyone could see any of the artists. The only casualty was a skydiver whose parachute caught fire
· Gary Glitters’s I’m The Leader Of The Gang went no. 1 in the UK
· Grand Funk Railroad released We’re An American Band and B.W. Stevenson released My Maria

· A record 140 hours and 34 minutes of continuous rock & roll was set by The Animation in St. Andrews Church Hall, Liverpool, England

· The Police, Squeeze and a local band, U2 played the Dalymount Festival in Dublin. U2 had released their first single several weeks earlier, but it had failed to chart
